What Is Hand Scraped Laminate Flooring?

Before the advent of power sanding equipment, wooden floors were flattened at the building site using a hand-held wood scraper. Texture differed with each installation and with the experience and skill of each wood craftsman. Today, the hand-scraped look is being revived in fine homes and commercial buildings where real wood flooring is prized for its Old World appearance and quality. The look is also now available in laminate form for the homeowner working with a more modest budget.
  1. Production Methods

    • Laminate flooring offers the look and texture of real wood flooring at a lower price. The same holds true for hand-scraped laminates. The product combines a wear layer, design layer, inner core and a moisture-barrier backing. The clear top layer offers protection against fading and stains. Look and texture are combined in the design layer with a photographic image added to a machine-milled surface that mimics the old-time hand-scraped look. A plastic resin core and moisture-resistant backing provides stability and protection against buckling and warping.

    Formats

    • Hand-scraped laminates are available in wide- or narrow-plank formats and in a wide choice of styles, from traditional oak and cherry to exotic dark woods and contemporary bamboo. Thicknesses range from 7 mm to 15 mm, and prices range from about .69 cents per square foot to a high of just over $2. The flooring is available in a wide range of colors and finishes suitable for almost any decor.

    Patterns

    • Several pattern options are available to give your hand-scraped laminate flooring the look you wish to achieve. The finished product can have a foot-worn look, like the flooring has been tread upon for years, long and circular brush marks to simulate hand scraping, and chisel marks ressembling hand tools like an antique adze may have made. The realistic-looking patterns fit well with retro renovations or anywhere that a historic look is desired.

    Laminates vs. Solid Wood

    • Hand-scraped solid wood floors can be re-sanded and refinished rather than torn out and replaced with subsequent renovation projects. Hand-scraped laminates provide the look of the real thing without the high price. Laminates resist stains and scratches better than their solid wood counterparts, and most laminates offer a comprehensive warranty from five to 25 years' duration. Laminates are easy to wipe clean and don't require labor-intensive waxing, stripping and other ongoing maintenance.
