How to Do a Stomp Knockdown Texture on New Sheetrock

Create a stomp drywall texture on brand new Sheetrock to create the look of distressed and aged walls. Textures are often created using gypsum drywall mud to lower cost and provide ease of access. When applied to freshly installed drywall, it is important to properly follow all installation instructions to ensure the plaster properly adheres and bonds to the new Sheetrock. Besides adding to a room's visual appeal, texture decreases sound and hides drywall installation mistakes and imperfections.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet rag
  • Bonding primer

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the installed drywall. Ensure there is no chalk dust anywhere on the surface, especially around the drywall joints. Wipe down the surface with a wet rag if dust is present. Slide your hand over the joints. If chalk is still present, continue to wipe down the surface.

Roll a bonding primer onto the new Sheetrock. Use a low nap roller made just for smooth surfaces like the new drywall. Two coats are often needed because the first coat will absorb directly into the surface of the Sheetrock.

    • 3

Open a fresh can of ready-mixed drywall compound. Load a drywall hawk with the plaster using a blade or putty knife. Swipe some of the plaster onto your drywall trowel. Create a smooth, but thick layer of plaster onto the Sheetrock. Once a large surface is covered, set aside your trowel.

Grab a drywall texture brush. Most texture brushes are circular with hard stiff bristles. Stamp an impression into the wet plaster. Continue to stamp down the entire wet plaster surface. Wash out the brush in clean water and set aside to dry. Continue to smooth plaster the wall, repeating the stamping process with the brush.

Let the wall dry for 24 hours and then apply two coats of paint, or until solid paint coloration is achieved.
