How to Make Designs on Ceilings Using Speckling

When you decide to repaint or redecorate the room, don't neglect the ceiling. It may not seem like an important visual feature, but a coordinating ceiling makes a room feel cozy and finished. It can also draw the eye up, helping you to view the room as a whole unit rather than making the eye stutter. If you don't like solid colors on the ceiling, try speckled paint. Speckling gives a ceiling warmth and visual interest without the need to paint neatly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the walls and floor with drop cloths, securing them with painters tape. You may have to double the tape along the top edges of the walls to keep the drop cloths from falling.

    • 2

Position a stepladder under one corner of your ceiling. If you start in the corners and work your way to the center, the pattern will be more even.

    • 3

Tape a stencil, if using one, into the corner of the ceiling. Stencil options include filigree patterns, geometric patterns, vines, flowers and clouds.

    • 4

Dip a 2-inch paintbrush into just a little bit of acrylic paint. Hold the brush in one hand and tap the metal part of the brush against your other palm. Speckles of paint will fly off the brush and onto the ceiling. The closer you hold the paintbrush to the ceiling, the more speckles you'll get.

    • 5

Allow the first layer of speckles to dry overnight before adding another color. Color combinations include: black and white, brown and white, yellow and red, different shades of the same hue and white or cream with any other color.

    • 6

Move your stencil systematically around the edges of the ceiling first. Start the second row of stencil work in the corner you started painting and work inward from there.
