How to Keep Mats From Creeping or Sliding Out of Position on Carpeting

Floor mats need some type of slip-proof surface to stay in position when they're placed on carpet. Whether the mat is decorative or used for exercise such as a yoga routine, securing the mat in place can prevent slip-and-fall accidents as well as the annoyance of having to place the mat repeatedly back where it belongs. Some mats are made with slip-free surfaces that face the carpet. These styles are especially popular with exercise mats that are on the floor only temporarily. If you need a semipermanent solution, double-sided carpet tape is your answer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn over the mat to inspect both sides. If your mat has a nonslip surface, characterized by rows of bumps or other small protrusions, turn that side down on the carpet.

    • 2

Cut strips of double-sided carpet tape slightly shorter than the width of your mat if it does not have a nonslip underside.

    • 3

Peel the back off a strip and affix it to one side of the mat, running along the width. Apply another strip every 6 inches along the width.

    • 4

Remove the backing strips from all of the strips of tape and flip the mat over to place it in the desired position on the carpet.

    • 5

Press the mat with your open hands, working along the length to bond the tape to the carpet.

    • 6

Pull up the mat when you are finished. Peel off the tape carefully, because some mats are made of a neoprene material that may rip or tear.
