The Best Size Ceramic Tile for a Room 12 x 20 Feet

Choosing the right flooring for your new or remodeled space can seem overwhelming. You must choose whether to install carpet, wood or tile, and once you've decided to install tile, you then must choose ceramic, porcelain, natural stone or one of the other many options available. To top it off, you must choose the right size for your room. In a large room such as a 12- by 20-foot space, select the right size ceramic tile to install based on personal preference and your plans for the room.
  1. Standard Sizes

    • First, choose the color or design of the ceramic tile you prefer. Once you've selected the design, evaluate the size options for tiles of that design. Typically, ceramic tiles are available in a range of standard sizes. One-foot square tile is most common, but you may also be able to find your tile choice in an 18-inch square size or a smaller 6-inch square size. Some tile designs are also manufactured both larger and smaller than these options, so check with your manufacturer or home improvement store to see what is available.

To Make the Room Look Larger

    • A 12-foot by 20-foot room is larger than most, so you may not be concerned with making the room look larger. However, if this is important to you, choose a larger size tile, such as 18-inch or 24-inch square. Larger tiles require fewer grout lines, making the floor look less busy and therefore larger. In a bigger space like this, larger tiles also look more proportionate to the room.

    For Ease of Installation

    • If you'll be installing the floors yourself, ease of installation may be important to you. In that case, consider a medium-sized tile, such as 12-inch square. Larger tiles are heavy and more prone to breakage, so they bring their own installation challenges, while smaller tiles make for tedious work, because the room will require so many separate tiles.

    Layout

    • Consider the tile layout you prefer in your room. If you like a running bond pattern -- similar to brickwork -- try to find a rectangular tile. If you'd like to add extra pizzazz to your floor, consider laying square tiles on the diagonal. You can be creative with your installation, adding a border of the same color tile in a different size, or even a different colored tile.
