DIY Ideas for Carpet Remnants

Find a creative reuse for your leftover carpet remnants instead of consigning the excess flooring to the dumpster. Extra, odd-shaped pieces of carpeting can either be used around your own home or be donated to community organizations. You'll also gain the satisfaction of making use of leftovers instead of stuffing them in a landfill.
  1. Levelling

    • Level your dryer and stop that annoying rattle.

An uneven floor can cause your washer or dryer to rattle. Cut one of your carpet remnants to fit under the corner of the appliance to level it and restore quiet to your house. If your entertainment center or dining table tilts or wobbles, shim the low side with a small scrap of carpet to cushion and level the furniture.

    Pet Bedding

    • Turn carpet remnants into a scratching post or pet bed.

Whether your dog sleeps in an indoor crate or an outdoor doghouse, make him more comfortable by lining his house with a soft carpet remnant. Your indoor cat may enjoy resting on a carpet remnant or even using a scratching post covered with a thick carpet scrap.

    Protect Surfaces

    • Cut carpet remnants to cushion your heavy entertainment center or sofa. This will prevent denting and scratching of your bare wooden floors without having to invest in adhesive furniture pads or bumpers. Placing small carpet scraps beneath your heavy furnishings may make them easier to move on hard floors as well.

    Rugs and Runners

    • Use your longer remnants to create an area rug or throw rug for a high traffic area. A narrow remnant may be used in a busy hallway as a bonus runner for existing carpet to prevent wear and tear in that region. A smaller rectangle or half-moon shape can be used as a floor mat in your garage or at the back door for wiping feet.

    Shoe Buffer

    • Eliminate the need for fancy shoe polishing cloths and velvety buffers with a repurposed plush carpet scrap. Affix the remnant to a palm-sized block of wood with craft glue. You have fashioned an effective buffer for the care of your fine shoes. Use it to remove dust and debris from the surface of your fine leather shoes and boots.

    Inhibit Weed Growth

    • Create a garden path free of weeds by concealing some of your extra carpet remnants upside down between your planted flower beds. The carpet scraps will prevent weeds from cropping up while a covering of mulch will hide your carpet path, rendering it a natural-looking area.

    Rug Spots

    • Offer the scraps to a local preschool or library. Carpet remnants and samples make excellent "rug spots". Each child can have a small piece of carpet to sit on at circle or story time so they each have their own spot which can help reduce the shoving and scrambling for a place on a larger rug.
