How to Hang a Canopy From a Hula Hoop

Even without a canopy bed, the ambiance that style evokes can be achieved by using a hula-hoop canopy suspended over the bed. The round holder is also called a crown canopy because it allows the appearance of a regal look at the head of the bed. A second method to utilize the canopy is to position it over the center or the bed. Then it is draped with sheer fabric by extending it to the four bed posts for a dreamy aura.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on the bed or use a stepladder to position the hula hoop. Near the head of the bed creates a crown look and toward the middle allows for draping the fabric more fully over the entire bed. Once placement is decided, mark the ceiling directly above the middle of the hula hoop. That indicates where the hook or hanging attachment will go.

    • 2

Use a stud finder to locate the stud to screw in the chandelier hook. This enables it to support the weight of the canopy.

    • 3

Screw a chandelier or "S" hook into the ceiling where the center mark is. The hook kit comes with the required screws.

    • 4

Measure then cut the gold cord, twine or other sturdy string into four different 3-foot lengths. This cord length works well for a 10-foot ceiling. Shorten or lengthen the cord for lower or taller ceiling heights.

    • 5

Tie one end of each cord to the hula hoop with a simple knot. Space them out at even intervals around the hoop. Use a hot glue gun to attach the cords so they won't slide. The hot glue dries in about 10 to 30 seconds.

    • 6

Pull the four cords together about one foot from the end of the cord and tie them in a single knot.

    • 7

Check to ensure that all sections of the hoop are parallel to the floor. If not, untie the center top knot and tie it again.

    • 8

Lay the canopy fabric flat on the floor and then fold it in half. Fabric that is 23 to 30 feet long works well, depending on how much will be puddled after hanging and draping on either side of the bed.

    • 9

Slip the hoop inside the center of the fabric and gather it at the top above the knot.

    • 10

Wrap a short length of cord around the gathered fabric. Tie the cord around the knot to secure the fabric.

    • 11

Grab the four remaining ends of the cord and tie them in another knot at the end of the cord. Hang the knot over the chandelier hook, then adjust the fabric as needed.
