How to Decorate With Room-to-Room Carpet

The floor is the most intimate and used part of a home. People spend more time in touch with a floor than any other part of the structure, so having both a good-looking and comfortable floor is important. Carpet is the first choice as a floor covering for many homeowners. Room-to-room carpeting is expensive, and normally homeowners keep it for at least 10 years, so making the right decorating choice in the beginning provides years of satisfaction.

Instructions

Look at all the other design elements that the carpet will be competing with. Wallpaper, paint, curtains, room size, room purpose and the age and gender of the rooms' main occupants are all factors to consider before choosing a carpet for that room.

Choose carpet that complements another design element. For example, if your wallpaper is highly textured, then your carpet might be plain. A textured carpet and walls would be overwhelming. If your home is angular, then carpet with geometric patterns can emphasis the angularity, or a pattern with flowers or other swirls can soften it.

Match the colors of the carpet to both the decor and desire for the room. Lighter carpet colors open up a room and make it seem larger, while darker colors do the reverse. A room meant for social gatherings would look better in a beige or pastel while a den or reading room might have a brown or dark blue carpet.

Create a path to lead someone throughout the home. A staircase and upper landing, for instance, might have a lighter color than the carpet in the room where it starts. People expect to see dark to light from top to bottom, and the lighter stairs is an invitation to go up.

Select a neutral color such as a light cream or beige with an unpatterned carpet if you want the same carpet extending into all the rooms. It will match with almost all decor and give the home a seamless look throughout the area.
