How to Lay Hardwood in a Pre-Existing Kitchen With a Dishwasher

A hardwood floor can be a good choice for your kitchen as long as you're careful about the product you choose. Pre-finished wood is capable of withstanding the high levels of moisture and humidity that are generally in a kitchen. There are several obstacles that you might face while laying the new hardwood floors in your pre-existing kitchen. For example, if your dishwasher is not flush with the cabinets, you will need to factor in that space.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing kitchen flooring. Score laminate and vinyl flooring with a utility knife and pull it up. For tile floors, remove the grout with a circular saw and remove the tiles with a pry bar.

    • 2

Place the new hardwood floor boards in the kitchen. Let them sit for three or four days. The wood will expand or contract depending on the climate of your kitchen.

    • 3

Set a hardwood floor board next to the dishwasher. Measure and mark the amount you will need to cut out to fit around the dishwasher.

    • 4

Make the cuts using a jigsaw. Set the board along the dishwasher to make sure it fits nicely.

    • 5

Nail the cut piece in place along the dishwasher edge. Continue nailing in the hardwood boards, staggering them across the kitchen floor.

    • 6

Mark the location where the shorter boards need to be cut. Make the cuts with a jigsaw and install with the power nailer.
