How to Install Carpet Squares on Concrete

Carpet squares offer a quick, convenient alternative to traditional rolled carpeting. You can lay out the squares in a variety of patterns, cut them to fit around obstacles and install them quickly without tack strips or special tools. Damaged or stained squares are easy to remove and replace without affecting the rest of the squares. Installing carpet squares on a concrete floor requires some preparation but is not difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the concrete to fully cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. Seal the concrete floor with a water-based sealant, if it's not already sealed, to prevent moisture from damaging the carpet squares. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the sealant.

    • 2

Sweep and vacuum the concrete floor to remove all dirt and debris. Mop the floor with a damp mop to remove any remaining dust or residue.

    • 3

Measure and find the center point of each wall around the room. Mark the center points. Snap chalk lines between the opposing marks on the walls. Where these chalk lines cross is where you'll start laying carpet squares.

    • 4

Start at the center cross, laying one carpet square in each of the four 90 degree angles created by the chalk lines. You can peel the backing of each one and set it as you go, or you can lay all of the squares out, then peel and stick them. Whichever way you go, lay out carpet squares along the lines chalked from the center points of the walls. Check the alignment of the squares and make adjustments to create the desired appearance.

    • 5

Measure and cut squares to fit against the walls at the perimeter of the area you're carpeting. Use a straightedge and a utility knife to cut the squares. Make several passes with the utility knife for easier cutting. Stick the cut squares in place, making sure they are tight against the wall and the other squares.

Cut squares to fit around obstacles where necessary. Check the alignment frequently to ensure a tight fit and a professional appearance. Vacuum the finished floor after installing all the necessary squares.
