Bamboo floors can be stained many different colors. Bamboo is very durable and termite resistant. However, termites are attracted to the soft inner portions of the bamboo stems. Although costs vary greatly, bamboo generally is a cheaper option than hardwood.

Pine is a softer wood, while maple and oak are harder. There are many choices of woods and stains available when selecting hardwood. Hardwood floors also can be refinished.

• Hardwood floors are not able to handle moisture as well as bamboo. Water can warp the floors, and hardwood is not good in rooms with a lot of moisture, such as a bathroom. Hardwood floors are prone to fading in sunlight. There are UV coatings to protect against this, but repeated sunlight over the years still may fade the wood. Hardwood floors easily can be scratched and dented. While more budget-friendly options are available, quality hardwood floors still tend to be expensive.
