How to Make Painted Concrete Floors Shine

A concrete floor can add simple sophistication to any indoor space, often providing rich color with an inviting sheen. After applying paint to a concrete surface, you may wish to make painted concrete floors shine with a glossy finish. Achieve the luster you desire in your concrete floor surface by applying a topcoat over the paint. Not only will the topcoat make the concrete exude a gleaming polish, but the top layer will also protect the paint layer from wear and tear.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner (with brush attachment)
  • Urethane sealer
  • Paint tray
  • Angled brush (3 inches wide)
  • Paint roller (with extension handle)

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the concrete surface with the vacuum cleaner and the brush attachment. Use the attachment to remove dust and dirt from all corners.

    • 2

Pour the urethane sealer into the paint tray. You will require approximately 1 gallon of urethane for every 275 to 300 square feet of concrete flooring.

    • 3

Cut in the outer perimeter of the concrete floor, applying the urethane to the perimeter of the floor with the angled brush.

    • 4

Attach the extension handle to the paint roller to enable easier application. Dip the roller into the urethane in the paint tray to coat the roller evenly.

    • 5

Brush the roller onto the concrete floor in the corner farthest from the exit door. Apply the urethane in a thin and even layer over the floor. Apply the urethane to the entire floor surface as quickly as possible before it begins to dry.

    • 6

Allow the urethane to dry completely for the time recommended on the product label.

    • 7

Apply a second coat of urethane to the concrete floor, using the same method you used to apply the first coat.
