How to Give a Ceiling a Stucco Mud Look

Adding texture to a ceiling can enhance the appearance of a room. Often ceilings are left smooth or textured with a spray "popcorn" texture. If you want a more extreme look, you can create stucco using drywall mud and a crow's foot brush. This texture will bond permanently to the ceiling and can be painted however you desire. If you have never applied texture before, practice on a scrap of plywood before moving on to your ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove as much furniture from the room as possible.

    • 2

Cover the walls, floor and any remaining furniture with plastic tarps, held in place with masking tape.

    • 3

Apply a coat of drywall primer to the ceiling with a paint roller on a pole. This will help the drywall mud adhere. Allow the primer to dry for the time recommended on the can.

    • 4

Mix powdered drywall mud with water in a 5-gallon bucket, following the instructions on the package. A thicker mixture will give a more defined stucco finish.

    • 5

Roll a 1/8-inch layer of drywall mud onto the ceiling with a paint roller. If desired, use a trowel along the borders for more control.

    • 6

Place a crow's foot brush on an extension pole and lightly hit it into the drywall mud, twisting it with each impact. This will create a stucco texture each time the brush pulls away from the mud. Allow the drywall mud to completely dry.

    • 7

Prime and paint the ceiling as desired.
