Decorator Tips on Using Tile Flooring

Flooring tile is versatile and long wearing. It comes in a wide variety of shades and colors, and sizes range from only a few inches across to large panels 18 inches or wider. Tile is either natural clay or made from artificial materials. It fits into rustic, classical, country and high-tech decor. With a few creative ideas tile can give a home decor a one-of-a-kind look.
  1. Patterns

    • An infinite number of geometric patterns are available with different colored tile. Expanding squares, Greek keys, spirals and cross-hatching are just some that are easily done. Mixing two similar colors such as light and medium green will provide a subtle, soothing pattern while mixing blue and red or black and white gives the senses a jolt that wakes them up.

    Trim

    • A pattern that is repeatable throughout the other decor in a room is to use a row of complementary colored tile only along the wall edges. This trims the floor with a definitive edge that you can match with a similar edge on the wall paint, drapery or cabinets, tying the floor to the other elements. Overdoing it will look too obvious, but if it is subtly done where it seems logical, the eye will begin to pick up on the pattern naturally.

    Backsplash

    • Using the same kitchen floor tile as a counter backsplash gives the kitchen a consistent look. The tile should be easily cleaned, grease resistant and tough enough to survive pots and pans banging against it. Also cover the area behind the stove with matching tile if it requires a backsplash. If the tile is small enough, carry the theme around the window case and door trim.

    Shower Stall

    • Use the same tile in your shower stall that is on the bathroom floor. Smaller tile works better with the cramped space for a shower. A waterproof adhesive must be used to glue the tile onto the wall base, and good ventilation is important. Otherwise, the tile may come down under its own weight as the moisture gradually weakens the bond between it and the wall.
