Can Peel and Stick Tiles Be Used on Stained Concrete Floors?

Peel-and-stick tiles are affordable, convenient and easy enough for even an inexperienced homeowner to install. The most important installation requirement is that the tiles are applied to a smooth, level surface. Concrete meets these these requirements, as long as moisture coming up through the concrete floor is not a problem.
  1. Color Stain

    • Peel-and-stick tiles can be used on concrete that has been stained for decorative affect, as long as the concrete has also been properly sealed. In many cases, stained concrete is sealed to protect the look and the color. The stain will have no effect on adhesion of the peel-and-stick tiles as long as the surface is properly prepared. There is no difference, however, in how a stained and sealed concrete surface or an unstained and sealed concrete surface should be prepared for application of adhesive tiles.

    Accidental Stain

    • In many cases, peel-and-stick tiles can be used on concrete that has been accidentally stained with liquids. The concrete must be sealed, however, or the tiles could be damaged or peel away due to moisture. Certain types of stains on concrete can pose a problem; oil or grease, for example, could make it difficult for the tiles to adhere. The stain must be well-cleaned and all residue removed before the tiles are placed.

    Moisture Test

    • Regardless of the type of stain, the concrete floor must be properly sealed so moisture doesn't rise up through the floor and loosen the tiles. A moisture test can help determine whether a concrete floor is properly sealed. Tape a piece of plastic sheeting to the floor, securing all the edges with duct tape and observe it after about 24 hours. If moisture has condensed on the plastic, the floor is not properly sealed and the tiles should not be placed until it has been sealed.

    Surface Preparation

    • If the floor is stained but properly sealed, it must be cleaned thoroughly so the tiles will stick. Use a de-greaser to remove any oil or grease residue. Sweep, mop and rinse the entire floor and give it a full day to dry to make sure all the moisture has evaporated. Peel-and-stick tiles will last much longer and stay in place if they are secured to a well-cleaned and prepared stained concrete floor.
