DIY Lattice Ceiling

An uncomplicated lattice ceiling will add an architectural element to any room in the house. A ceiling lattice is often added to the room below the lighting fixtures, which will filter their light through the lattice, eliminating any need to add light fixtures to the lattice itself. This ceiling treatment is striking in a kitchen or bedroom and can be designed to cover a portion of the ceiling or the entire area. Stain or paint the lattice to match the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the ceiling area to be covered with the lattice with the tape measure. Cut two cherry wood rails to the length of the area with the table saw. These two lengths will serve as end strips to the completed lattice.

    • 2

Measure the width of the ceiling area to be covered with the lattice. Cut as many lengths of wood rails to the measurement as needed with the table saw. The lengths will be spaced 2 inches apart.

    • 3

Attach horizontal slats to the end strips with the wood screws, applied with the electric drill. Attach the remaining end strip to the opposite ends of the lattice rails strips with the screws and drill.

    • 4

Attach vertical slats perpendicular to the attached slats, 2 inches apart. Drill through both slats 2 inches from the outer edge of the horizontal slats. Cover the screws with wood putty, let the putty dry and sand smooth with the sandpaper.

    • 5

Sand the entire lattice with the sandpaper. Paint or stain the lattice.

    • 6

Insert the L-shaped metal anchor bolts into the ceiling with the drill at lattice perimeter spots that are no more than 24 inches apart. Hang the completed lattice from the L-bolts.
