DIY Custom Cove Moldings

Molding is used as both baseboard and ceiling enhancements, and is available in ready-made and custom ordered varieties to fit any room theme and decor. Cove-style molding refers to the shape of the decorative wall finish, featuring a curved bottom. Popularly made of vinyl materials, the cove molding is used along the bottom of walls in rooms with hard floors, as opposed to the rolled version, used for carpeted areas. Home improvement enthusiasts can create their own custom cove molding with the help of a few carpentry tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one of the vinyl molding strips up to the first baseboard area. Mark where the baseboard ends onto the back of the molding with a pencil and L square.

    • 2

Lining the L square up to the marking on the back of the molding, press firmly and use the utility knife to slice through the molding.

    • 3

Apply adhesive to the back of the molding. Use the comb to spread the adhesive evenly across the backside of it.

    • 4

Apply the molding piece to the appropriate baseboard, curved edge toward the floor. Apply pressure to the molding piece to secure trim to the baseboard.

    • 5

Repeat measuring, cutting and gluing process for each necessary molding piece.

    • 6

For inside corners, use the utility knife to cut away the curved bottom of secondary adjoining pieces.

    • 7

For outside corners, line the molding up against the baseboard. Line the L square up to the backside of the molding and corner edge, and mark the corner onto the molding using the pencil. Bend the molding at the marked edge and use the utility knife to slice a flat edge at the end.
