How to Figure out Dimensions of a Room in Square Feet

One of the most important home measurements you can take is the space available in each room. The more space a home has, the more valuable it is on the real estate market. Also, knowing the square footage of the room helps with remodeling projects. Calculating the square footage of a room is an exercise in mathematics and geometry. By dividing the room into simple geometric shapes, calculating the measurements of those areas, and then adding the totals, you can determine the square footage of any room.

Instructions

  1. Square and Rectangular Rooms

    • 1

Measure one side of a room from one wall to its opposite with the tape measure. For example, let's say the room has a length of 16 feet.

    • 2

Measure the adjacent wall and write down its measurement. For example, let's say the room has a width of 14 feet.

    • 3

Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage (16 x 14= 224).

    Triangular Sections

    • 4

Measure the base of the triangular section of the room. Write down the number.

    • 5

Measure from the center of the base to the top of the triangular room. Write down the number.

    • 6

Multiply the base by the height and divide the result by two. For example, if the room's base is 16 feet long with a height of 5 feet, its area is 40 square feet (16 x 5 = 80, 80/2 = 40)
