Funky White Vinyl Flooring Options

Vinyl flooring can be an ideal option for many rooms in your home because it is inexpensive and easy to install and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Although white vinyl may seem like an odd choice for your floor because it is difficult to keep clean, it actually provides a versatile background for many decorative flooring options. In particular, it is an effective choice if you want to give your floor a funky, new look because you can use white vinyl tile or sheets in several different ways that create a hip, unique look for your home.
  1. Bold Checkerboard

    • One funky option for white vinyl tile is to use it to create a checkerboard pattern. However, instead of pairing your white tile with black for a traditional checkered floor, choose a bright shade to contrast with the white vinyl. A red-and-white checkerboard floor can give a room a bold look, but you can try unusual flooring colors such as yellow, purple or lime green. In a bathroom, pair your white vinyl tile with a bright blue or turquoise for a cool, tranquil look.

    Spatter Effect

    • If you have a white vinyl tile floor already in place and want to give it a funky makeover, try painting it with a spatter effect. This technique involves flicking a saturated brush so that droplets of paint fly across the floor for a messy, spattered look. You can use a single color or choose several for an even bolder look. Prior to painting the floor, clean it thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease or other residue that might prevent the paint from adhering properly. Use an acrylic primer and acrylic paint, and apply a coat of polyurethane afterward to protect the finished surface.

    Vinyl Decals

    • Vinyl decals are another option for giving a white vinyl tile floor a funky look. You can find them in a variety of patterns and designs and can customize the look of your floor to match the rest of your decor. They are also easy to apply because you simply peel off their backing and stick them to the floor. You can peel them off quickly as well, so you can easily move or change them whenever the mood strikes. Depending on the look that you prefer, you can place decals across the entire surface of the floor or choose a single, large decal to place in the center. Decals are also available in phrases or quotes, which can add a flair and visual interest to your plain white tile.

    Decoupage

    • You can also give your white vinyl floor a funky look by adding unique, personalized images to the surface with decoupage. Unlike vinyl decals, images and patterns that you decoupage to your vinyl tile are permanently affixed to the floor, so you should think about your design carefully. You can use any paper items that you like to decoupage, though, so hunt through magazines, books and even family photos albums for images to spice up the look of the floor. Covering the entire floor may be too labor-intensive, so consider creating a border along the sides of the room or smaller arrangements in the corners or center of the floor. Use polyurethane to fix the images in place, and top the floor off with another coat to create a smooth, even finish for the floor.
