How to Get Vinyl Tiles to Stick to Concrete

Vinyl tile dramatically alters the look of a concrete floor, giving it a more finished look. Laying self-sticking vinyl over concrete requires some extra preparation that, if skipped, will lead to endless frustration and a waste of money and tiles. Simply put, vinyl tile will not stick to bare concrete. Nor will it stick to moist concrete, so start this project a couple of days ahead to allow a thorough cleaning with time to dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the floor to remove loose dust and dirt.

    • 2

Mix 1/2 cup of oxygen bleach with 1 gallon of hot tap water in a bucket. Pour the solution on the concrete floor and scrub it with a scrub brush to remove all of the dirt and grease. Rinse, and mop up the liquid with old towels. Allow the floor to dry for a day or two.

    • 3

Stir the latex floor primer for about three minutes, or as directed by the manufacturer. Pour primer into a roller pan. Coat a paint roller with primer.

    • 4

Roll the primer over the floor in long, overlapping strokes to coat the floor evenly and completely. Allow the primer to dry as directed. If directed, apply a second coat of primer.

    • 5

Apply the self-stick vinyl tiles directly over the dry primer.
