DIY Installing Carpet Remnants on the Floor

After the installation of new carpet, you may have pieces left over. Instead of getting rid of the carpet remnants, keep them for use in one of several different ways. If the new carpet gets hopelessly stained, remove a small piece around the stain and replace it with a piece of carpet remnant. You can also make stair treads, a small area rug or door mat from these scrap pieces. Gluing the remnants is the best way to install them permanently to the floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the location where you’ll be installing the carpet remnant. Remove any debris from the area where it will cover to allow for proper adhesion of the glue. If old carpet glue is on the floor beneath, use sandpaper to smooth it down.

    • 2

Cut the piece of carpet remnant to the size needed for your project with a carpet razor.

    • 3

Apply some carpet adhesive onto the front of a trowel. Spread it onto the floor in the area where you’re installing the carpet remnant, creating an even layer.

    • 4

Dust off the back of the carpet remnant, line it up with the adhesive on the floor and press it into place. Use a carpet roller to help flatten it if the carpet remnant is large. Allow an overnight drying time before walking on the carpet.
