How to Cut Laminate Floor Tiles to Size

Laminate floor tile is manufactured without regard for the actual size, irregular shapes and bump-outs in your floor. You will often need to cut down a tile so it will fit around cabinets and appliances, as well as trim work and floor vents. Unlike laminate wood boards, laminate tiles aren't difficult to cut to size but they are sometimes difficult to cut accurately. To help cut the tile to size, you can create templates.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where the tile will be placed with a measuring tape. For irregular shapes, use a piece of paper as a template. Place the template in the space and use a pencil to trace around a pipe or counter corner. Cut the template to size and place it back in the space to make sure it fits.

Mark these measurements on the backside of the laminate floor tile with a pen or pencil. If you used a template, place the template on the back of the floor tile and trace it.

Place the laminate floor tile on a work surface. A piece of cardboard or cutting board is ideal. Cut the laminate tile to size using a utility knife.

Set the cut tile in place to make sure it fits. If cut properly, remove the plastic backing to reveal the adhesive and put the tile in place. If not cut properly, make the proper adjustments to the size, test it again and stick it in place.
