How to Cover Ugly Ceramic Tiles in the Bathroom

Whether you don’t like the color or pattern of your ceramic tile in your bathroom, changing it is easier than you may think with the help of a few supplies from your local hardware or builder’s supply store. Painting ceramic tile allows you to remodel an outdated bathroom without the mess and headache of removing tiles while staying on a budget.

Mild abrasive tile cleaner
Steel wool
Masking tape
Oil-based primer
Orbital sander
220-grit sandpaper
Vacuum
Broom
Sponge mop
Cloth
Oil-based paint
Paintbrush or roller

Instructions

  Apply a mild abrasive tile cleaner to the ceramic tile. Scrub the ceramic tile with coarse steel wool to help remove the high-gloss finish.

  Rinse the cleaner from the tile with clean water. Use a sponge mop to remove any excess water on the tiles. Allow them to dry completely before proceeding.

  Tape the edges of baseboards, the sink, toilet and bathtub with masking tape to protect their surfaces.

  Apply two coats of oil-based primer to the ceramic tile, allowing for ample drying time between coats. Proceed once the second coat dries.

  Sand the ceramic tile gently and rough up the surface with an orbital sander equipped with 220-grit sandpaper.

  Vacuum and sweep the ceramic tile to remove any dust. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and allow it to dry.

  Paint the ceramic tile with an oil-based, gloss paint. Brush or roll on a thin coat of paint and allow it to dry. Reapply several thin coats until you reach the desired color.

  Wait at least 48 hours before allowing traffic onto the newly painted ceramic tile.
