Ideas for a Ceiling in a Girl's Bedroom

Ceilings in most rooms are usually white or a solid color matching the rest of the room. Instead of keeping the ceiling in a girl's room white, look at it as a blank canvas for adding personality and a touch of creativity to the room. To keep the room from looking too busy, when decorating a ceiling, keep the walls of the room a solid color in a lighter or more neutral hue.
  1. Painted Sky Ceiling

    • Decorate the ceiling to imitate the sky. For a daytime sky, paint the ceiling light blue and use craft sponges or stencils to add white, fluffy clouds. Include birds, a rainbow or a bright sunshine for added details. Another option is to paint the sky a black or a darker blue and turn it into the nighttime sky. Paint stars on the ceiling with white or glow-in-the dark paint or stick glow-in-the-dark star stickers on the ceiling. For a girl who enjoys space, paint stars to represent popular constellations or add drawings of planets.

    Special Materials

    • Cover the ceiling with a special material. Use nails to attach multi-colored wide ribbons to the middle of the ceiling and extend the ribbons outward to reach the walls, nailing them in place to create a ribbon-covered ceiling. Instead of ribbon, drape fabric across the ceiling for a more sophisticated look. Choose a patterned fabric to represent a girl's interest or a shiny, solid-colored fabric. A patterned wallpaper will also provide visual interest on the ceiling. For a girl who likes butterflies, purchase nylon butterflies, tie fishing line to them and use thumb tacks to hang them from the ceiling. If your child likes to draw, paint the ceiling with chalkboard paint and allow her to stand on a ladder and add her own designs, then change them periodically.

    Painted Patterns

    • Paint a pattern on the ceiling. Use painter's tape to create blocks or stripes on the ceiling and fill in the blocks or stripes with different colors of paint. Create a maze on the ceiling, drawing on the maze with pencil and covering the lines carefully with black paint. Label one end of the ceiling "start" and the other end "finish." Allow a girl to draw on her own pattern with pencil or create a unique pattern with painter's tape, then paint it in. Elaborate patterns on a ceiling stand out best when only one or two colors are used.

    Murals and Collages

    • Create a mural on the ceiling to represent a girl's interests, such as a tropical beach scene, a pink mural with ballet slippers and tutus, groups of angels, or a flower garden. Outline the mural in pencil or create a grid on the ceiling to mimic a drawing of the design on a piece of graph paper. Or instead of creating your own mural, create a collage of pictures or posters on the ceiling. These might be of favorite movies, musicians or famous crushes, or create a more personal look with pictures of family and friends.
