Threshold Ideas for Tile to Laminate Floors

A threshold is an area in a doorway or passage, a common place for moving from one flooring material to another. For example, moving between a kitchen and a dining room may lead to a transition between tile and laminate materials. If you are planning construction work, you may need a threshold barrier. There are several available options you can use, depending on what type of threshold you need.
  1. Wood Baseboard

    • The wood baseboard strip is one of the simplest threshold ideas for transitions, and works well for almost any transition inside the house. You can choose from nearly any wood type and quickly install the strip yourself as you work on the project. Wood baseboards and thresholds also work well because laminate designs are often in wood shapes, so the two can blend well together when leading over to tile.

    Metal Strip

    • A metal strip is a possibility if you want a clear separation between the tile and laminate. This utilitarian option provides a high degree of protection for your tile and grout, making it ideal when you want to ensure that walking over the transition area will not cause any damage to either side. As with wood options, a metal strip is also easy to install.

    Height Changers

    • A number of customized height-changing transitions are available for a threshold and are typically made in rounded designs from a variety of woods. This works well if you have a transition from a higher-level floor to a lower-level floor. This is often the case, because tile is typically thicker than laminate. Also, if you install laminate over a previous floor, the laminate may be higher than your tile.

    Stone Thresholds

    • If you want a high-quality floor transition, consider using a stone strip for your transition. This works especially well for entryways or bathrooms, but you should make sure that it matches the rest of your design. If your tiles are stone as well, consider this type of transition. A pale marble threshold may work well if you have ceramic tiles that are similar in color.
