How to Cover an Ugly Ceiling Without Using Paint

The easiest way to transform walls is to paint them. The ceiling, often called the fifth wall by designers, is no exception. Yet, when the ceiling is truly unsightly, perhaps due to stains or cracks, it may take more than a coat or two of paint to cover it up. Fortunately, homeowners have several options for improving the appearance of this sometimes overlooked architectural element. Using techniques and products other than paint also offers the element of depth and texture that paint does not.

Install pressed tin panels. Request help with the project as the individual pieces weigh up to 4 lbs. each. Choose the right finish, such as pewter, copper, chrome or brass, to suit your décor. Tin panels are also ideal to reflect light in darker rooms.

Apply a layer of wallpaper. Choose one of the numerous colors, textures or patterns available to immediately transform a room. Use a scattered pattern or a solid color paper on ceilings that are irregular or sloped. Hang the wallpaper with assistance for best results; one person can smooth the paper while the other holds the roll.

Install a paneled ceiling. It creates an undeniable cottage look. Use plywood panels or tongue-and-groove paneling boards for the look of authentic wood without the expense.
