How to Keep a Couch From Sliding on Hardwood Floors

No matter the type of wood or finish, furniture movement leads to wear and tear that can taint the appearance of your hardwoods. Couches that slide back and forth when weight is put upon them can dig gouges and scratches into wood floors. You can take preventative measures to ensure that your hardwoods retain their original look by preparing couch feet with a non-slip material that grips the floor without ruining it.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty your couch of cushions and accessories to maneuver it easier. Turn the couch on its back with the assistance of a helper. Measure the diameter or length and width of one couch foot, using a tape measure to find the size of glides that you need to purchase.

    • 2

Wash the bottoms of the couch feet with an all-purpose or wood cleaner, depending on the material that the couch feet are made of. Dry the feet with a towel. Cleaning and drying the feet removes dust and dirt particles that can interfere with the adhesion of glides or pads.

    • 3

Remove the adhesive backing from the felt furniture glides or pads. Affix the adhesive side onto the couch feet and apply pressure to fasten them in place. Don't use abrasive pads made from hard rubber or metal since these materials can scratch hardwood floors.

Arrange the couch back in the upright position. Slide or carry the couch to a different spot in the room if you want to put an area rug down as a second layer of protection. Place a rubber rug runner on your hardwoods underneath the area rug to prevent the rug from sliding. Position the couch feet on the area rug.
