What Kinds of Rugs or Carpeting for a Work Area in a Basement?

There's something about carpet that takes a basement from useful to welcoming. Just because you use your basement for a work area doesn't mean you don't want it to be comfortable and attractive. Rugs or carpet can make your basement work area look better and feel better under your feet, but choose a rug or carpet that's suitable for a basement setting for the best results.
  1. Moisture Resistant

    • Even if your basement seems dry, there may be the potential for water and moisture, either from plumbing installed in the house or outside water sources that can sometimes divert water into your basement. Therefore, the best rugs or carpets for a basement are those that will not be damaged by moisture. Polyester, nylon, olefin or other synthetic fibers are suitable because they usually are impervious to water and are resistant to mold and mildew. Rubber is also a suitable choice, if you're using rugs, as it withstands water well.

    Synthetic Backing

    • Carpets or rugs with synthetic fibers are a must for your basement work area, but before you make a purchase, check the backing. Most carpets and rugs have a jute backing, which is not the best option for a basement setting, as jute is a natural fiber that does not hold up well to moisture, and it can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Make sure the carpet or rug you choose is 100 percent synthetic.

    Durable

    • No matter what type of work you do in your basement work area, your rug is likely to take some abuse. Choose a carpet or rug that is durable enough to withstand the work you do and will not be damaged by heavy equipment or objects with sharp edges. Low-pile carpets or rugs are a suitable choice, or textured rubber rugs will hold up well for most work situations.

    Easily Cleaned

    • All carpets or rugs need periodic cleaning. When carpets or rugs are used in a work area, they need to be able to withstand more than the usual dust and dirt. Pick a carpet or rug that doesn't hold on to dust, dirt, wood or metal shavings, or whatever is produced in your work area. Select a material that can easily be vacuumed and cleaned or scrubbed to remove stains.
