How to Bring Color Back to Bluestone Floors

Bluestone, a limestone variety, is a classic building supply used in some parts of the United States because of its availability and durability. According to an article published by James Madison University, bluestone gradually fades from various shades of blue to a weathered gray. It is also not unusual to see bluestone in hues of pink. Regardless of the color, you can freshen and brighten bluestone by cleaning, treating and sealing this colorful rock. These bluish rocks make excellent pavers for gardens and stones for exterior walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep away dust and debris from the bluestone. Power-wash bluestone walls and pavers to remove ground-in dirt. Allow the stone to dry completely overnight.

    • 2

Apply fresh grout or grout sealer between the bluestones. Allow the grout to cure for six to 12 hours before continuing.

    • 3

Rub scratch solvent into any dings on the surface of the rock. Treating the bluestone before sealing will give the bluestone a more even finish.

    • 4

Apply a liquid sealant to the bluestone to seal in the color, reduce fading and give the stone a slight shine. Use a roller brush or paintbrush to apply the sealant. Choose a high-gloss sealant if you want the stone to be shinier.
