How to Keep Carpets From Curling

Carpets are a beautiful and practical part of your home decor. They add color and texture to your rooms while protecting expensive flooring from wear, and protecting your feet from the cold, hard floor. If not properly maintained, however, carpets and area rugs can become unsightly and dangerous. Curling of the edges and corners detracts from your carpet's beauty and poses a tripping hazard. Preserve your carpet's good looks and your family's safety by repairing curls and preventing them from occurring in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Reverse-roll curled carpets with latex backing. The latex may have retained the curl after having been rolled for shipping or storage.

    • 2

Steam curled edges and corners with a clothes steamer or by covering the curl with a damp towel and ironing the towel. Repeat on the underside.

    • 3

Weigh down the steamed edges and corners with books or other heavy objects, and allow the carpet to dry.

    • 4

Apply grip tape along each edge of the carpet’s underside, according to the tape manufacturer’s instructions. Trim the tape edges with scissors. Apply adhesive corners to each underside corner. The tape and adhesive will prevent future curling.
