Separating Tile and Carpet

Many homeowners prefer to have a soft carpet under their feet in some rooms in the house. These same homeowners may have a hard surface in other rooms, such as the entryway or kitchen, to simplify the cleaning process when these floors get dirty. If there is a separation between a hard surface, such as a tile floor, and a carpeted surface, this transition can pose a tripping hazard if the transition hasn’t been installed properly. One way to alleviate such a hazard is by installing a metal transition strip.

Things You'll Need

  • Transition from carpeted floor to tile floor
  • Transition strip
  • Carpenter’s hammer (for nail-down transition strips)
  • Transition strip nails (silver- or gold-colored, to match nail-down transition strip)
  • Rubber mallet (for carpet bar transition strips; also used for T-type transition strips)

Instructions

  1. Nail-down Transition Strip

    • 1

Place the transition strip over the carpet-to-tile transition. If the transition strip is a carpet bar that encloses the carpet edge, place the transition strip on the bare floor, butted-up closely to the edge of the tile.

    • 2

Insert the first transition strip nail into the pre-drilled hole in the center of the transition strip. Carefully hammer the nail into the floor to secure the transition strip.

    • 3

Insert a transition strip nail into one of the remaining holes on the transition strip. Carefully hammer the nail into the floor to further secure the transition strip. Repeat this step until all transition strip holes have been filled. Proceed to the next step only if you are using a carpet bar; otherwise, you have successfully installed the transition strip to the transition.

    • 4

Insert the loose edge of the carpet into the gap created between the bottom and top of the “C” that the carpet bar creates. Carefully hammer the top edge of the “C” down with the rubber mallet so that the top edge grips the carpet.

    T-type Transition Strips

    • 5

Place the notched edge of the transition strip into the carpet-to-tile transition gap.

    • 6

Use the rubber mallet to gently hammer the transition strip into the gap. Hammer the transition strip along the top, from one end of the transition to the other. The transition strip should snap into place.

    • 7

Inspect the transition strip to verify that the strip is even across the transition. If any part of the transition strip appears to be sticking up, gently hammer that part of the strip down using the rubber mallet until the transition strip is level.
