Antiquing Painted Wooden Floors

Even if your wood floors are old, they may not look old if they've been given a fresh coat of paint. If they are new, they won't look antiqued without a little extra effort to give them a well worn, vintage appearance.

  • Broom or vacuum

Instructions

    • 1

Whack the floor in various places with a hammer. Strike in random but grouped areas, creating the look of heavy usage and traffic on chosen areas of the floor. Make some of the hammer strikes crooked, even using the claw part of the hammer at times.

    • 2

Whip the floor with a bag of heavy nuts, bolts or screws in various places. A heavy chain can also be used in this manner to create random dents in areas that would show much wear on an antique floor.

    • 3

Wrap a piece of coarse or medium sandpaper around a scrap of wood. Sand the floor in random areas, especially in areas that would experience a lot of wear over time. Expose some of the natural wood coloring underneath when sanding. Sweep or vacuum up the sawdust when finished.

    • 4

Hammer some nails through the other scrap wood block until the nail points show through the other side of the wood. Hammer them in at random angles and in random places.

    • 5

Open a can of latex paint and stir it using a stir stick. Pour some paint out into a paint tray or pan and reseal the paint can.

    • 6

Paint the entire floor using a roller or paintbrush. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 7

Sand the floor again in random areas as in Step 3 to expose the first paint color beneath the new coat. Continue until your floor looks as worn as you'd like.

    • 8

Smack the floor with the nail points protruding from the wood block. Do this in random places on the floor.

    • 9

Mix a little dark latex paint with water in a bowl or paint pan, creating a dark color wash. Brush this onto the floor in random directions, covering the entire floor. Rub it around with a dry rag. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.
