Cover the furniture and floor with a drop cloth to protect it from paint splatters. Group small pieces of furniture together to minimize the number of drop cloths needed. Remove curtains from the windows, or cover them with sheets to protect them from paint.
Select a ladder tall enough to comfortably reach the beam. Keep moving the ladder to accommodate a comfortable reach. Stretching too far could result in an accident.
Wash the beam using mild detergent, warm water, and a sponge. Rinse and squeeze out the sponge often to remove dirt and grease. Paint adheres better to a clean surface.
Sand the beam using medium-grit sandpaper and remove the dust using a clean cloth. Sanding is necessary if the white paint has a glossy finish. Paint adheres better to a rough surface.
Apply painter’s tape to the edge of the ceiling along the side of the beam. Press the tape firmly in place to prevent paint from seeping underneath.
Pour paint into a quart container that fits onto the drop-down tray of the ladder. A container too large for the tray could become off-balance and fall.
Paint the sides of the beam and then the bottom with primer, using a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry according to the label. Clean the paintbrush as recommended on the label. Return unused primer to the paint can and wash the container in preparation for the finishing coat of paint.
Apply the dark paint to the beam using a paintbrush. Apply a second coat of paint if needed. Remove the painter’s tape after the paint has dried.
Clean the painting supplies, and return the furniture to its usual place.
