Glossy vs. Matte Laminate Floor

When you process film photography, you must decide whether you want your family photos and artistic masterpieces to have a shiny glossy finish or a nonreflective, flat finish. It's almost the same with glossy versus matte laminate flooring, except you must also evaluate maintenance requirements, traffic, visibility and your overall room design. Consider your decorative motif when choosing between the two flooring finishes.
  1. Maintenance

    • Both glossy and matte laminates are low-maintenance flooring options compared to other materials like hardwood, carpet and bamboo. Glossy and matte laminate floors do not stain unless they are exposed to permanent dyes. Opt for glossy laminate flooring if you want permanent luster and shine. Maintain glossy laminate floors using a soft-bristle broom or vacuum to remove light dirt and dust. Mop matte laminate floors with a nonwax floor cleaner and avoid moisture or water saturation while cleaning.

    Formal or Informal Design

    • Consider the formality of your room design when choosing between glossy and matte laminate floor finishes. High-gloss laminate flooring is reflective and has a slightly more formal appeal than its counterpart. Choose a glossy finish if you install laminate in a formal dining room or a formal living room. Opt for matte laminate flooring in a country kitchen, laundry room or informal den.

    High-Traffic Areas

    • If you are installing laminate floors in a high-traffic area and you are concerned about light surface scratches, purchase laminate flooring with a matte finish. According to Armstrong, matte floors conceal the visual appearance of surface scratches slightly better than glossy floors. However, due to the tough resistant synthetic materials in laminate flooring, neither glossy nor matte laminates scratch or dent easily.

    Decorative Motif

    • Evaluate your decorative style when selecting a laminate finish. Glossy laminates harmonize with traditional, colonial and Victorian furniture and ornate accessories. Matte laminates coordinate with rustic, country and cottage furnishings. Both finishes complement modern contemporary decorative motifs. Assess your personal style and choose a laminate floor finish that is most eye-appealing with your furnishings, cabinetry, hardware and light fixtures.
