If you are planning to have hardwood flooring installed but are concerned with the temperature of the floor, consider having a radiant floor heating system installed. Although quite costly, these systems use a boiler to heat water that runs through a series of pipes installed directly below your floor. When the radiant floor heating system is turned on, the heat from the pipes will heat the wood above them.
Though covering up a new hardwood floor with rugs is not ideal, placing one or more area rugs strategically in a room with hardwood flooring will help avoid the floors from feeling so cold. Choose area rugs that match the color of the flooring and the overall decor of the room. For example, place a suitably colored area rug beside your bed so that when you get up each morning, your feet don’t immediately hit the cold hardwood floor.
Wearing slippers in your home is a cost-effective way to keep your feet warm if you find the hardwood floor is cold. Slippers are also useful for keeping your feet comfortable. If you find that you’re used to soft carpet, the hardness of the wooden floor can be a painful adjustment. If you don’t favor the style of slippers, opt for clean running shoes with non-marking soles to wear indoors.
When you want to heat your home to avoid the chill of hardwood floors, turning up the furnace is not necessarily cost effective. Instead, purchase one or more portable space heaters that you can use in the rooms in your home containing hardwood flooring. Many space heaters also have fans that allow you to aim the hot air. By setting up a heater in the correct manner, you can aim the output at the floor to warm it.
