How to Install Claw Foot Tubs on Laminate Floors

Laminate flooring’s click-together installation process makes it a relatively easy project for handy homeowners seeking an affordable alternative to hardwood. Most manufacturers do not recommend bathroom installations, however. Laminate flooring is made from fiberboard or particle board with a high-resolution photographic image on top. Excess moisture may cause warping and buckling of the flooring. Homeowners who opt for laminate flooring under a claw foot tub should take special precautions to protect the laminate.

Instructions

    • 1

Install rubber underlayment under the laminate flooring. Typical laminate installations include a foam underlayment which sometimes includes a moisture barrier. A rubber underlayment provides a layer of protection to the floor below against spills and flooding.

    • 2

Place a bead of glue on the tongue of the laminate panels that will be installed near the tub. Laminate flooring does not normally require glue application. In bathrooms, however, the glue provides a tighter seal between planks to block water seepage.

    • 3

Lift the claw foot tub and place it directly onto the flooring. Do not drag it across the laminate or reposition it once it has been placed unless it can be lifted up.

    • 4

Place a large rubber-backed mat near the tub to catch spills.

    • 5

Wipe up spills as soon as they occur to keep water from pooling on the floor.
