How to Lay Hardwood Flooring Along a Sliding Door

It's unlikely you'll be able to fit any wall moldings or skirting boards along your sliding door frame once you've laid a hardwood floor. However, you will need to put something there to cover the expansion gap you've left. You can buy a range of door thresholds from hardware stores or online that will disguise the empty space in front of your door and keep moisture out of your floor.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Jigsaw
  • Measuring square
  • Pen
  • Plastic spacers
  • Tapping block
  • Hammer
  • Door threshold
  • Silicone sealant and gun

Instructions

    • 1

Measure how far the base of your sliding door frame protrudes from the wall if it isn't even and flush. You'll need to cut your hardwood flooring to shape if your sliding door's frame juts out into the room from your wall's surface.

    • 2

Add the expansion gap recommended by the manufacturer of your flooring to the measurements you've taken. Then, cut the boards to be laid in front of your sliding door to shape with a jigsaw. Use a measuring square to make sure you’re marking out straight lines before cutting. You can carry on laying up to the expansion you've used for the rest of the room if your door's frame is level against your wall.

    • 3

Lay your boards up to your sliding door's frame. Use plastic spacers to measure the expansion gap and a tapping block and hammer to knock your boards into position.

    • 4

Remove the plastic spacers from around your sliding door when you've finished laying the whole floor and replace them with cork expansion strips.

    • 5

Secure a door threshold made of the same material as your door frame between the frame and your floor boards with a silicone sealant. You'll need to make sure the threshold is thick enough to cover the expansion gap left around your door.
