Can I Put Thinset Over Floor Primer?

Thinset is a type of adhesive paste used in masonry to place tiles onto the floor, such as those in the bathroom or kitchen. Due to the importance of having clean tile before applying thinset, some people understandably have concerns about applying thinset on top of primer; however, you can. As long as you apply the thinset properly, it will stick properly -- if not better -- on your primer.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour some water into your thinset mortar and mix it. Use enough water to give the mortar a consistency similar to peanut butter.

    • 2

Dip your drywall trowel into the mixture, putting a moderate amount on the corner. This should be the size of a softball, or a bit larger than a baseball.

    • 3

Apply the thinset to the piece of tile, slightly angling the trowel and pushing it toward each of the four edges. Continue pushing the thinset toward the edge until it is even throughout the tile.

    • 4

Place the tile on the floor where you want it to be. Push it firmly to ensure the adhesive sticks to the ground.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 with the remaining tiles.
