Inclined ceilings are sometimes able to make a room feel more spacious. An inclined ceiling is simply a ceiling that slopes from a high point before ending its slope as it meets a wall. Large rooms with inclined ceilings that are high above the floor give an open and spacious feeling to the room. On the other hand, inclined ceilings that are not high above the floor may make a room feel tight and closed off. These ceilings sometimes make interior design difficult when the ceiling slopes upward from the top of a short wall. It is sometimes difficult to place items like tall dressers or lamps against the wall because the ceiling is too low.
Tray ceilings are different from inclined ceilings because they are not slanted like inclined ceilings are. However, tray ceilings are quite different from traditional flat ceilings that you find in most homes. A tray ceiling features an outer layer that surrounds the room which is several inches lower than the rest of the ceiling that is located inside of these outer edges. Tray ceilings provide a feeling of space without the emptiness that is sometimes associated with inclined ceilings.
Some consider cathedral ceilings to be a type of inclined ceiling. A cathedral ceiling ascends upward until it reaches a pinnacle, but this does not necessarily mean the ascension from the wall to the pinnacle is straight. Cathedral ceilings may have a number of different angles. A cathedral ceiling could start out as an incline, then go flat, then be inclined again.
You can recognize a cove ceiling by its curved shape. In fact, cove ceilings are different from inclined ceilings thanks to their curved shapes. A cove ceiling is often used in doorways and hallways to give the room or area in which the ceiling is located a tunnel-like feel. Cove ceilings can be dramatic and high or they may be about the same height or only slightly higher than other ceilings in the home.
