How to Attach Carpet Runners

Carpet runners add style and comfort while protecting tile, hardwood floors and carpeting in areas with heavy foot traffic. Available in a wide range of materials, from typical carpet fiber to vinyl, runners come in many lengths and widths to accommodate almost any space. Regardless of location, proper installation will prevent trips and falls and help preserve the condition of the runner for many years.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the hallway or area.

    • 2

Subtract the width of the carpet runner from the width of the hallway, then divide by two. This gives you the measurement that should be allowed on either side to center the runner down the length of the hallway. For example, 48 inches (hallway) minus 36 inches (runner) = 12 inches, divided by 2 = 6 inches per side.

    • 3

Choose the beginning position for the runner, and mark it with pencil or chalk, depending on the flooring color. Mark the side allowance on each side of the hallway with a framing square, making marks every 10 to 12 inches down the length of the hallway to the point where the carpet runner will end.

    • 4

Cut the rug pad so it is 1 to 3 inches smaller than the carpet runner on all sides.

    • 5

Sweep and mop the flooring surface to remove all dust, pet hair and other debris. Allow the floor to dry completely before you install the rug pad and carpet runner.

    • 6

Remove the rug pad's plastic liner, which protects the surface that will grip the flooring. Immediately place the rug pad on the floor, with the grip side facing the floor, centering it between the markings for the carpet runner.

    • 7

Place the carpet runner on top of the rug pad, between the markings, and smooth it out as flat as possible. Depending on the runner's material and backing, it may take some time to flatten completely. If the edges curl, place bricks or heavy boxes on the ends to help smooth them.
