What Trims Match With Wood Floors?

Wood floors can add a warm, natural look to any room of your home. Although they are often thought of as having a neutral tone, the shades in wood floors vary depending on the type of wood used. As a result, choosing a trim color that matches or complements your flooring might be a challenge. To find the best fit, determine the undertone in your wood floor and decide whether you prefer a soft, subtle look or a bold, contrasting palette that makes the room pop.
  1. White

    • For a simple, classic look, you can’t go wrong with pairing a wood floor and white trim. As a neutral shade, white doesn’t compete with the warm, natural tones in the wood, so you can use it with any species, including both dark and light woods. White trim also works with virtually any wall color, so you have a wide range of decorating possibilities. However, if you pair white trim with a dark wood floor such as cherry or mahogany, the look is very bold because the contrast between the two shades is strong. For a softer look, try cream or ivory trim, which has a slight yellow cast so the trim doesn’t look as stark when paired with rich wood tones.

    Brown

    • Pairing your wood floor with trim in an earth tone helps complement the natural tones of the flooring. Brown is an ideal option because it adds a strong look to the room and creates an attractive contrast with light wall colors. If you have a dark, rich wood floor, brown can also create a monochromatic look with the flooring because the shades are similar in color and intensity. But if you prefer a natural color for your trim and find brown too dark, a taupe or tan color is a softer alternative.

    Red

    • Red trim can help give your room a warm, cozy look when paired with a wood floor. While you can opt for a bright, primary red, deeper shades such as barn red, brick red or maroon usually work best because they have a muted appearance that works with a wider variety of wall colors. Red trim is a particularly attractive option with a dark wood floor because it matches the intensity of the rich tones in the wood.

    Blue

    • Blue trim can provide an attractive look with wood flooring because the cool tones in the blue contrast with the warm, natural colors in the flooring. In particular, a mid-tone blue trim works well with a light-colored wood floor that has golden undertones. When paired with white walls, the combination creates a bright, airy look that is ideal for a room with coastal or beach inspired decor. For a darker wood floor, navy trim can create an elegant look that balances out the rich tones of the flooring.
