How to Use Thinset to Put Under a Dishwasher

You can use thinset on a variety of different surfaces. Thinset is often put down to help hold tile in place, even out a concrete floor or to seal cracks in concrete. You can use it for multiple flooring needs. Apply thinset under your dishwasher if your floor is uneven and to prevent possible water damage that the dishwasher may cause if it leaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the area where the dishwasher will be installed. Use a dustpan to scoop up any dust, dirt or debris.

    • 2

Moisten a sponge and wipe the floor to remove any small pieces of dust.

    • 3

Pour the premixed thinset into a bucket, stir it with a spoon -- and then scoop a few tennis-ball-sized globs of thinset onto the floor.

    • 4

Smooth out the thinset with a notched trowel. Tilt the trowel at a 45-degree angle, move over the thinset in a front-to-back direction, and then repeat in a side-to-side direction. Ensure that you create a smooth and even layer.

Allow the thinset to dry before installing your dishwasher. Read the label on the thinset to review the cure time. Some thinsets take only a few hours to dry, while others take several hours.
