How to Border a Laminate Floor Over Concrete

Creating a border over the concrete floor in the expansion gap between your new laminate floor and your wall will be the finishing touch to your flooring project. As well as giving your flooring a clean finish around the perimeter of your room, installing a proper border will hold your flooring in place and protect against rising moisture and heat loss through your expansion gap.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the spacers in the expansion gap between your flooring and your walls.

    • 2

Ensure the polyurethane sheet you fitted under your laminate boards extends to cover your expansion gap. If it doesn't, or you used a foam underlayment with an integral water-resistant layer, cut strips of polyurethane sheet to place over any part of your concrete subfloor that's exposed in your expansion gap.

    • 3

Slide cork expansion strips into place between your flooring and your walls on top of of the polyurethane sheet.

    • 4

Measure the length of your walls and cut your molding to size using a jigsaw. Cut the end of your strips of molding at a 45 degree angle where they will meet in the corners of your room. Do this by clamping your molding inside a miter box and using a handsaw to cut a 45 degree angle.

    • 5

Run two generous beads of glue along the back of your molding and then press it into place against your wall.

    • 6

Seal the joints between your molding and your floor and walls with a caulking gun. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any excess caulk. This will protect against heat loss.
