How to Use 2x4s for Flooring

Whether in a pinch or for extra sturdy floors, 2-by-4-inch boards can be used for flooring. Traditional hardwood floors are made from 3/4-inch thick wood, therefore a floor laid with 2-by-4-inch boards will be thicker than normal. Laid on a sub-floor of the same size boards makes the floor 6-inches thick. Keep this in mind when planning. Be sure to remove all baseboards or trim from around the wall before beginning.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin in the far left corner of the room. Lay 2-by-4-inch boards end-to-end along the wall from one side to the other. Push the ends flush together and connect with flat brackets. At the far right corner, use an L-bracket to attach to the first board going the length of the room. Continue in this fashion around the entire room. Cut the boards if necessary to fit.

    • 2

Measure every 4-feet down the length of the frame and insert a line of 2-by-4-inch boards. Connect the boards going across with flat brackets and connect to the ends with L-brackets.

    • 3

Cut boards to 4-feet long and insert between the dividers every 3-feet. Connect with L-brackets at each end. The frame will now be divided into 3-by-4-foot rectangles.

    • 4

Lay the first board flush to the wall on the frame and nail in place with 3-inch general purpose nails. Use a circular saw to cut the next board to fit flush to the end of the first and extend to the wall. Nail in place.

Measure the length of the second board and cut another the same length. Begin the next row with this cut board. Lay on the frame and lightly hammer the board on the side to push it flush to the first row of boards. Nail to the frame. Use a full length board for the rest of the row. Continue in this fashion until the frame is covered.

Seal the floor. Apply a wood sealant using a paint roller to protect the floor. Let dry according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
