How to Glaze an Orange-Colored Wall

Sometimes, when you choose orange for your wall, the results can be much more intense than you anticipated. Instead of repainting, glazing is a fast and inexpensive way to tone down the color. With a few materials and tools from a reputable paint dealer, you can execute this technique yourself. A color-wash faux glaze works well for this situation. Effective colors to use in this glaze include burnt sienna for a deeper, rustic look or red oxide for an Asian lacquer look.

Instructions

    • 1

Put drop cloths over nearby furniture and the floor.

    • 2

Mix the glazing liquid with the tint, pouring a quart of liquid per 100 feet square of wall into the container. Add the tint slowly and mix it as you go. Stop when the tint is rich with color, but before it is opaque.

    • 3

Apply the glaze with the brush onto the orange wall.

    • 4

Brush over the glaze in different directions while the glaze is wet. This creates randomness and wipes out the original brushstrokes, creating a more interesting surface.

    • 5

Dab the wet glaze with bunched cheesecloth, This will pick up any drips and create a look of texture.
