How to Paint a Block Wall to Look Like a Rock Wall

When you have a block wall in your house that you feel looks unsightly, you can make the wall look more decorative by painting it. Although you could use a flat color to paint over the block wall, this could still leave the wall looking unappealing. One alternative is to paint the wall using a faux finish technique to make it look like a rock wall. Everything you need in order to create a faux rock wall can be found at any arts and crafts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the block wall for 15 to 20 minutes using a sanding buffer with medium-grain sandpaper. This will smooth down any roughness or chipping, and will take off any old residual paint.

    • 2

Vacuum the block wall using a shop vacuum to remove any dust or debris.

    • 3

Paint the entire wall using dark gray latex paint with a 3-inch-wide flat paintbrush. Tap the paintbrush into the cracks and creases of the block wall to fill them in as well. Allow the block wall to dry for 2 hours.

    • 4

Coat a 3-inch filbert paintbrush with medium gray latex paint, then tap the brush over the surface of the block wall. Do not fill in the wall completely, but paint the wall to appear speckled. Do not paint the cracks or creases. Allow the block wall to dry for 2 hours.

    • 5

Coat a 3-inch round paintbrush with light gray latex paint, then tap the brush lightly over the surface of the block wall. Only apply light gray paint lightly over the wall. Allow the paint to dry for 2 hours.

    • 6

Paint the entire wall with clear latex glaze, then allow the wall to dry for 2 hours.
