DIY Fabric Faux Frosted Windows

Frosted windows or glass panes are the result of acid-etching or sand-blasting that obscures the view through the glass while still allowing light through. This creates an element of privacy effective for bathroom windows, cabinet windows or sliding glass doors, among others. If you are looking for a frosted effect on windows currently in place, it can be quite expensive to have them replaced. Save some money and create a frosted effect (fabric pattern or not) yourself, using a few simple items from your home goods store.

Instructions

Purchase a frosting film from your home goods store with the preferred fabric pattern. A frosting film applies to your windows just like a sticker, sticking to the glass panes. Frosting film allows you to easily select a desired pattern, without having to create it yourself. Be careful when applying the film, improper installation can result in trapped air bubbles, which will ruin the effect.

Spray the window panes with frosting spray. Frosting spray applies just like spray paint. Be sure to tape up the edges of the glass panes with painter’s tape to avoid any accidents. Use a paintbrush to apply brush strokes, creating the desired fabric pattern. Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area and allow a few hours for the spray to dry.

Paint the glass panes directly with acrylic wall glaze. The wall glaze applies clear and dries opaque. While certainly the most labor-intensive way to get a faux frosted effect on your windows, the acrylic wall glaze gives you the most freedom with the desired pattern, creating from the brush strokes. Be sure to do this only in a well-ventilated area and allow plenty of time for the glaze to dry.
