How to Paint Primitive Country Furniture

Primitive country home decor involves vintage pieces of furniture influenced by colonial pioneer styles and Americana folk art. Wood furniture is usually painted and distressed, with time-worn areas and flaking paint quite visible. Hunt for interesting tables, chairs, dressers and other furniture pieces at yard sales, thrift shops and estate sales. When you get the piece home, use a faux painting technique that will turn any piece of wood furniture into a treasure that fits right in with your primitive country decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your work station in a well-ventilated area, such as a garage, patio or out on the grass. Wipe down the chair with a wet cloth to remove any dust and debris. Let the chair dry completely.

    • 2

Paint the chair with the latex paint. Apply a single coat using long, even strokes and let it dry for about 20 minutes. Apply a second coat to the chair and let it dry for 24 hours.

    • 3

Sand the chair to distress it. Use sandpaper to rub away the new layer of paint you just applied, down to any paint underneath, or even to expose the wood. Distress areas that would first show natural wear, like the edges of the chair seat, the top of the chair back and the corners of the legs. Wipe off any dust with a cloth.

Apply the dark stain to the chair with a brush. Use the brush to push stain into small crevices, corners or joints. Immediately wipe off the stain with old cloths. The stain will leave the original color a little darker and highlight wood grain patterns. Allow the chair to dry for about 12 hours.

Paint clear glaze on the chair, sealing in the latex paint color and stain. Concentrate on making smooth lines with no drips or ridges. Allow the chair to dry for around six hours.
