How to Apply Glaze Paint to Furniture

Paint glaze gives furniture a rich, multidimensional look you won't get from traditional paint alone. Glaze helps the intricate details of wood furniture become more visible by adding contrast to the piece. Glaze alone will not provide coverage for the furniture -- the glaze is applied over paint or stain. You can purchase ready-made glaze in various colors. Don't be afraid of adding a brown or other dark glaze to a light piece of furniture; once you wipe the excess glaze away, you will be left with shadows and detail rather than a permanently stained piece of furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe furniture with a damp cloth and allow to dry, or, if you have just painted the furniture, allow the paint to completely dry before glazing.

    • 2

Use a paintbrush to spread glaze over the furniture. If you are glazing a large piece, such as a bed, you may want to glaze it in sections so that the glaze doesn't dry before you wipe it off.

    • 3

Use a clean rag to wipe the excess glaze off of the furniture. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain.

    • 4

Allow the glaze to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area.
