How to Apply Window Film to a Mirror as a Frame

When you have a large, flat mirror that doesn't add much to the decor of your bedroom or bathroom, consider adding window film to create a faux frame. Framing a mirror in wood is expensive, but with window film, you can quickly upgrade the mirror to something fabulous. Window film comes in many colors, patterns and decorative shapes; you can even purchase window film to create an etched or frosted look. It's easy to remove window film whenever you change the look of the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the mirror well with glass cleaner and paper towels. Measure the mirror's length and width using the tape measure.

    • 2

Cut the window film to match the measurements. Pay attention to how the design looks when cut, and especially to how the corners match up.

    • 3

Lay the pieces on the floor so that the pieces form the faux frame. Trim the window film as needed so the pattern will match all the way around the faux frame. For example, if the window film has a floral print, ensure that the red flower at the edge of one piece is matched by a red flower on the piece that touches it.

    • 4

Cut away any details on the inside edge of the faux frame. For example, if the window film pattern is a floral print, you can trim around petals and leaves for a custom look while leaving the outside edges straight.

    • 5

Mist one side of the mirror with the water. Carefully peel the backing off the window film and place it on the mirror. Use the sponge to press the film to the glass, and move it around the film to press out any air bubbles or water pockets.

Repeat with the three remaining pieces of window film, pressing out the air bubbles with the sponge. Allow the mirror to dry completely and clean it off with some glass cleaner and a paper towel.
